Studio Activity: Micro-Structure

Goal:  Use an analysis of nature and its structure as a basis for a design and composition.

Use a virtual microscope online to study radiolaria and diatom or study illustrations here > http://goo.gl/HvSZES or here > http://goo.gl/b5CPCx .  As you analyze them, seek the natural structure found in repetition and replication that binds and unifies the element.  Make some preliminary sketches based on these observations and analysis of these designs.  In other words, accurately draw what you observe first, then use that as a stimulus to make an interesting visual design.  Change, simplify, elaborate, combine, transform the images as you desire.  Make a charcoal or pastel abstraction to suggest unity of form and surface decoration.

Create an Album Description “Tweet” right in your public post when you share the album.

1. Paste a quotation that a historically, significant person said about Interest or Creativity.

2. Define Interest.
   
3. Distinguish any originality or risk taking that you developed for impact.

4. Describe any materials or techniques you applied with careful craftsmanship.

5. Identify how you intentionally composed this photograph to evoke Interest.  

6. Synthesize your responses into a concise ‘tweet’ of no more than 140 characters.  

7. Write your full name.

8. Put them all together like this and copy and paste it into your Album Description.

Jessie Belle Rittenhouse (1869-1948) was a literary critic and poet. In 1930, she was awarded the first Robert Frost Medal for lifetime achievement in poetry.
